The time has come to put on the helmet and start touring the roads of Girona on top of the bike. Do you prefer a circular route full of forest greenery around? Or maybe a nice view of the sea? Whatever your answer, here you will find all this and more: pedal!
One of the most emblematic natural places in the Girona territory is undoubtedly the Estany de Banyoles, in the region of Pla de l’Estany; surrounded by forests and mountains but leaving a flat area around it perfect for cycling around.
In addition, being located next to Banyoles, it is very easy to get there by car without having to travel great distances before starting the real route and a visit to the town can be an ideal cultural complement to the route. Being a circular route, it doesn’t matter where you start and, if you start from Banyoles, it’s easy to find the path that takes you all the way around.
Along the route there are lookout points and viewpoints, swimming areas, open during the summer season; and the Draga park where you can have a delicious picnic to regain your strength and fill your stomach. Looks good right?
Another point of great natural interest and ideal for cycling routes with the family, is the Empordà wetlands. Listed as a natural park, it offers a unique environment to cycle through; with lookout points to observe the migratory birds that stop in its lagoons.
Our proposed route starts from Mas el Cortalet, the park’s main information point. From there, there is a dirt track with no unevenness that will take you around the natural area.
As we already saw on the Be Inspired blog, there are many routes to do in the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, so it’s important to follow the relevant signs or the directions from the information center to avoid taking too long a lap .
Boys and girls will surely enjoy spying on the beautiful birds during the breeding season. Of course, protect yourself from the sun and mosquitoes!
The most famous greenway in Girona is indisputably the Carrilet greenway that connects Olot with Sant Feliu de Guíxols, passing through the city of Girona itself. It is therefore a long route that passes through many different landscapes, so that some sections are flat and affordable for small cyclists.
The layout of this route is the same as that of a railway a century ago, so it connects different towns, some of which still preserve the building that served as a station. Here you can see where the Carrilet route goes and choose which section is most suitable for you.
The particularly simple sections to do with children would be: Girona – Quart (13 km), Llagostera – Santa Cristina d’Aro (22 km), Santa Cristina d’Aro – Castell d’Aro (5 km) or Anglès – Amer ( 15 km), always counting the round trip distance.
Doing the different sections of this route is a very good way to discover the territory calmly and enjoying a sport as beautiful as cycling!
Only 4 km separate Torroella from Montgrí to the beach where the river Ter flows and make up an ideal route to take with the family following the quiet course of the river that reaches its end point at the beautiful beach of Gola del Ter.
It is a route that is suitable for everyone and that is not lost, since all you have to do is cross the bridge that leaves Torroella de Montgrí and take the path that follows the river, always keeping the water at left hand.
One of the prizes that this route has is the possibility of taking a good swim when you get to the sea when it’s hot, but yes, you have to remember that you have to go back afterwards!
Finally, we present another beautiful route that followed the route of a railway, in this case the greenway that connects Palamós with Palafrugell. As you can imagine, this route always goes along the coast and allows you to have a spectacular view of the sea from your bike.
Another advantage of this route is that the elevation gain is minimal, which is why we added it to this list. Both young and old can do it without difficulty and when passing through the interior of towns, it is easy to find a place to rest or have a bite to eat before continuing.
Come and do this beautiful coastal route with family, friends or with whomever you want to share a unique experience in a privileged environment. To pedal!
If you want to do more than one bike route or if you’re planning a longer stay in the regions of Girona, don’t think about it anymore and come to the campsites!
