Castaween at Girona campsites: autumn, chestnuts and activities for the whole family

2 de October de 2026

Roasted chestnuts, panellets, costumes, pumpkins and the occasional unexpected scare. When the end of October arrives, Castanyada and Halloween come together at Girona campsites to create one of the most entertaining family getaways of the autumn: Castaween.

Over several weekends in October and November, some campsites organise workshops, costume contests, haunted tunnels, scavenger hunts, Castanyada celebrations and activities designed for both adults and children to enjoy this time of year in a different way.

And the camping season does not end with summer. Autumn in Girona is an opportunity to reconnect with nature, discover the colours of the forests, enjoy the region at a more relaxed pace and turn Halloween and Castanyada into the perfect excuse for another getaway.

What is Castaween?

Castaween combines two celebrations that take place in Catalonia at the end of October: Castanyada and Halloween.

Castanyada is a Catalan tradition linked to All Saints’ Day. Roasted chestnuts, panellets and sweet potatoes are all part of this celebration, which remains very much alive today. Halloween has added costumes, pumpkins, spooky decorations and the popular tradition of trick-or-treating.

From this mix, Castaween has emerged informally: a way to enjoy both traditions without having to choose just one.

And at campsites, the combination works particularly well: nature, families, outdoor activities and a whole weekend to enjoy together.

When are Halloween and Castanyada celebrated in 2026?

In 2026, Halloween falls on Saturday, 31 October, while the following day, Sunday, 1 November, is All Saints’ Day.

That means the weekend of 30 October to 1 November will be one of the main dates for celebrating Castaween, although some campsites start their activities the previous weekend and others continue into November.

It is a great opportunity to plan an autumn getaway to Girona and discover that camping can also be enjoyed —and very much so— outside the summer season.
