This part of the Girona province is the perfect place to disconnect, relax and admire nature, and the ideal spot to do outdoor activities and adventure sports of every kind.

The Girona Pyrenees also features some of the most charming villages in Catalonia. When visiting, don’t miss the chance to check them out. These picturesque villages are enchanting, with a connection to the mountains, history and local people. So, here are some of the prettiest villages in this corner of the world.

Besalú:

Besalú, a town steeped in history to the east of La Garrotxa, is considered one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Catalonia. Next to the town entrance, a medieval bridge dating from the 12th century greets visitors, leading inside a fortress across the river Fluvià. We recommend wandering through the streets and alleys to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and admire the styles revealing the existence of an old Jewish quarter. If medieval villages are your thing, don’t miss Besalú!

Santa Pau:

In the heart of La Garrotxa, there’s another medieval village set in the idyllic surroundings of the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park. As with Besalú, its narrow streets date from the 13th century, taking you back thousands of years. Explore centuries of history, strolling around this charming place. We won’t add anything else. Go and see the wonderful village of Santa Pau with your own eyes. It doesn’t disappoint!

Castellfollit de la Roca:

Without leaving La Garrotxa region, visit Castellfollit de la Roca. One of the smallest villages in Catalonia, but also one of the prettiest. As you’ll see from the highway, one the small town’s main charms are the spectacular views of a village nestled on a grandiose cliff formed by lava and the erosion of the rivers Fluvià and Turonell. Simply stunning!

Beget:

Close to Camprodon lies Beget, a charming little village you’ll fall in love with for sure. Its quaint streets seem trapped in time. This is no surprise: the village still has its original 12th century structure. Although most homes have been restored, the city’s medieval scenery remains alive and well in each street. If you’re planning a trip, we recommend visiting the San Cristóbal church and crossing the three bridges joining its neighbourhoods.

Puigcerdà:

Just before the French border lies the capital of the Cerdanya region: Puigcerdà. Its bustling streets feature shops and services of every kind, and with the stunning surrounding scenery, this is one of the most popular places in the Girona Pyrenees all year round. If you’re planning a trip, in addition to exploring the town’s streets, we recommend going up the bell tower, which offers stunning views of the Cerdanya Valley. Puigcerdà has several corners to stroll around, but don’t miss the lake for spectacular vistas.

These are our favourite charming towns in the Girona Pyrenees.
